Restoring the St. Joseph Tower

About the St. Joseph of Arimathea Chapel

Our church is an historic landmark and contains many beautiful and inspiring works of art, including the mortuary chapel named for St. Joseph of Arimathea, which the church plans to repair and restore. This chapel was consecrated in 1908 in memory of Dr. George Hendric Houghton, the founder of the Little Church.  Traditionally, it has been used as a place where friends and family members keep watch and pay their respects prior to a funeral. 

The windows on either side of the chapel altar depict the disciple Nicodemus (left) and St. Joseph of Arimathea (right).   On the evening when Jesus was crucified, St. Joseph of Arimathea went to the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, and obtained permission to take away Jesus’ body. 

St. Joseph and Nicodemus wrapped the body in a clean linen cloth and laid it in a new tomb.

Above the altar is a copy of Raphael’s famous painting “The Transfiguration,” which is in the Vatican Museum in Rome.

This replica was originally installed in 1863 above the high altar before being moved to the mortuary chapel.  The window commemorates Jesus’ divinity being revealed to his closest disciples, Peter, James and John.  Jesus is shown transfigured before them, with his face shining and his clothing becoming dazzling white.  A voice from heaven says “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.  Listen to him!”  At the base of the mountain, an anxious father seeks healing for his son.  Jesus heals the boy, telling his disciples that nothing is impossible for those who have faith.

Restoration Needs

We are currently seeking funds to restore the St. Joseph of Arimathea Chapel.  The Transfiguration window has several cracks, and the weight of the glass has resulted in its partial separation from the metal support grid.  Funds are being sought to repair and protect the stained glass, as well as to replace the existing wood frames and sills.

In addition to restoring the Transfiguration window, the church seeks to repair the tower housing the chapel.  The brick walls of the tower require full masonry restoration. Weather elements have caused deterioration to the mortar joints and brick surfaces. The water table at the base of the tower has deteriorated the brick and concrete base, resulting in cracks and spalling. All masonry wall surfaces will need to Rebe repointed and thoroughly cleaned, and all loose brick will need to be replaced.  The  exterior wood louvers and other wood elements, as well as the slate roof and rainwater drainage, also need repair.  In addition, a new copper gutter and roofing membrane is necessary to address any leaks.

The anticipated cost of the restoration of the Saint Joseph Chapel Tower is $420,000.  Gifts of any amount are gratefully received.
