These questions are natural given all the visual signs in the street and in the front of the church.
In 2004 contracts were signed by the church and the developer Clarett for a building to be erected on the former Parish House site and an adjoining site on 30th Street. The first four floors of the 55 floor condominium building will become our new Parish House. This will give the church new and improved facilities to carry out its work and mission.
Because the Church of the Transfiguration is the National Landmark for Church and Theater, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has been very careful to protect vulnerable parts of the building including the copper roof. In addition, safety laws mandate that walkways in the vicinity of construction be covered.
Despite these visual impairments, the life of the church goes on unimpeded. The church remains open every day from 8.30am to 6pm (3pm on weekends); the daily services are held Monday through Friday; Sunday services continue at 8.30am and 11am; and weddings, funerals, concerts and other ministries all continue.
Please enjoy your visit and support us in the work that we are doing.
